If you are visiting the city of Bristol then it is well worth making a trip to Bristol Cathedral. This is a building which was built in 1140 and has outstanding architecture. Make sure that you pick up a hire car at the airport so that you can easily drive to the cathedral and visit it.

The cathedral is located on college green where you can easily stand back and admire the building across the grass. It started off as an Abbey church but only a few parts of this building remain. There were other buildings constructed within 30 years of this original one and they still survive and include one of the finest Norman chapter houses still standing. Later an additional chapel was added on and then part of the church was rebuilt in a gothic style. In 1542 the building was given cathedral status but it was not until the late 1800′s when any more work was done on the building which consisted of a new nave and new west front.

The building now is a grade 1 listed building and has some unusual features such as being a hall church and being in German gothic style which is very unusual for cathedrals in Britain. There are also very unusual vaults and so plenty of interesting and rare architecture to look at. There is also a very good organ which attracts a lot of attention too. It was built in 1686 and then rebuilt in 1907 with the original case and pipes still being used.
