After a week with my wife in Bristol I found that I wanted a change of scenery. Not that I disliked the place – I loved it – but I wanted to see a bit more of Britain. Having moved from Bath to the Toronto as a five year old I felt it was a good decision to go and visit the place I would have grown up in had circumstances been different. The only issue is that Bath is 13 miles away from Bristol. There is, of course, public transport between the two cities but I’ve heard stories about it and they aren’t exactly bathed in praise! And in any case, a bus or train return for two adults was likely to be expensive! Naturally, we didn’t have our own vehicle in the UK because we were only here on a month long holiday. We did, however, take the decision upon arrival to rent a car from the airport for the duration of our stay and, I have to say, it is one of the best decisions we’ve made. It made everything so easy. We were able to jump in the car and in about 20 minutes we were in Bath for a wonderful day. It was sunny too, which really brought out the beauty of the place. We saw the Roman baths and the Crescent where the scene in the musical ‘Oliver’ was filmed (my parents went to the liberty of keeping me in touch with my heritage through such activities). It was a day that I will never forget and it’s all thanks to the fact that we had a car. The only annoying thing is that I can’t understand why we moved away…

Visit Bristol Harbour

If you want to learn about the history of Bristol and the trading that happened there as the city developed then it is well worth driving your hire car to Bristol harbour. It has been in existence since the 13th century but was refurbished in the 19th century and is now a floating harbour, meaning that there are no tides effecting the water level.

As ships and cargo increased the harbour was no longer large enough to deal with the traffic and so most of these now go to nearby Avonmouth instead. The harbour is now mainly used as a tourist attraction meaning that it is a great place to visit as there is plenty to do. There are museums, galleries, bars and nightclubs there now and a lot of the old warehouses have been converted in to attractions or stylish housing. Some of the most popular attractions are the museum boats which include the SS Great Britain that you can go aboard and learn about what life was like on board as well as the journeys that the boats did.

You can also have river cruises from the harbour and there are ferries which can take you to other parts of the city including the main railway station. If you time your visit right you may even get to see the Bristol Harbour Festival which is visited by many different boats including tall ships and lifeboats. A historical and interesting visit for all and a must for anyone who has an interest in boats.
